European oak, Quercus petraea, is the species most New York designers reach for when a room calls for herringbone. Its even grain lets the pattern lead, whether the room is a prewar parlor or a new-construction living room.
Below are the European oak herringbone floors we carry, from a clean Prime grade to wire-brushed Rustic, with the facts you need to compare them.
Prime Grade Herringbone for a Quiet Floor
In a formal Upper East Side apartment, a herringbone floor usually works best when it stays in the background. Our Luce Herringbone is a Prime / AB grade European oak chosen for a clean, refined appearance.
Luce is prefinished in a Matte UV Urethane Aluminum Oxide finish. Each piece is 5/8" thick, 4" wide and 23-5/8" long, and the same oak is also available in straight plank and in custom milled chevron, so an entry gallery and the adjoining rooms can share one material.
Character Grade for Townhouses and Brownstones
Brownstones in Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights often carry original mantels, plaster and stair rails, and a perfectly uniform floor can look too new beside them. A character grade adds natural variation that sits comfortably with older details.
Our Portaviva herringbone is an ABCD (Character) grade European oak, prefinished in a Matte UV Oil. Its pieces are 5/8" thick, 4-3/4" wide and 23-5/8" long, slightly wider than Luce, which gives the pattern a little more scale in a parlor floor or a double living room.
Rustic Herringbone with a Wire-Brushed Texture
For a SoHo or Tribeca loft with exposed brick and timber, a rustic grade brings the most movement to the pattern. Our Caravita herringbone is a Rustic / ABCD grade European oak, prefinished in UV Oil, in 5/8" x 4-3/4" x 23-5/8" pieces. Its natural knots and color shifts are part of the design, so the floor looks settled from the day it is installed.
If you want texture you can feel underfoot, Piandoro is the same size and grade with a wire-brushed surface under its UV Oil finish. The brushing opens the grain slightly, which helps the floor hold its character in busy family rooms and entries.

Hungarian, Italian and French Herringbone Patterns
Beyond grade, the shape of the pattern changes how a room reads. Our European Oak Herringbone Collection is offered as a Hungarian herringbone varnished with Oil-UV, with Italian and French herringbone patterns also available.
Each of the three patterns is offered in 4 6/8" or 5 1/2" widths. If you are weighing a pointed pattern against a classic one, our guide to herringbone and chevron explains the difference in the cut. Wider pieces make a bolder pattern, which suits larger rooms; narrower pieces keep the scale closer to traditional prewar floors.
Large-Format Oak Herringbone
Penthouses in Hudson Yards and lofts with long sightlines can carry a much larger herringbone than a prewar room. Large planks laid in a historical pattern take on a contemporary appearance because of their proportions, and fewer joints make the floor read calmer across a wide room.
Our Lørent Oak Classic Herringbone is prefinished and offered in sizes from 3" x 23.6" up to 11.8" x 47.2", in tones that include Natural, White, Sand, Clay, Light Grey, Graphit and Umbra. For a lighter look, see Lørent Oak Natural Herringbone.
