A geometric wood tile turns the floor into the main design element of a room. Instead of boards in a running pattern, each tile is a composed panel, and the panels repeat across the room like a carpet that never wears out. Our geometric tile collections come in three models.

This guide compares Model #1, Model #2 and Model #3 by species, tile size and finish, so you can match the pattern to the scale of the room.

What a Geometric Wood Tile Is

Every tile in these collections is a prefinished wooden tile made for onsite assembly. The wood is selected to a Superior Selection grade, each tile is 3/4 inch thick, and the species and dimensions are fixed for each model, as shown on the Model #2 geometric parquet page.

Because the tiles arrive prefinished, there is no sanding or finishing of the pattern on site. That suits an occupied apartment, where a long finishing schedule is hard to arrange. It also keeps the contrast between species crisp, since the finish on each tile is applied before installation, as with our Model #3 tiles.

Model #1: Exotic Species in Smaller Tiles

Model #1 is the smallest of the three patterns, which makes it a good fit for a foyer, a library or a powder room. Our Model #1 in palisander uses Santos morado, Machaerium scleroxylon, from South America, in tiles of 2'2" x 2'2" and 1'8" x 1'8".

A second version, Model #1 in cabreuva, uses Myrocarpus frondosus, also from South America, in a 2'7" x 2'7" tile. Both are varnished with an Oil-UV lacquer. Palisander reads darker and more dramatic, while cabreuva gives a warmer field for a room with lighter walls.

Model #2: Contrast in Maple, Oak and Wengé

Model #2 is built on contrast between a pale wood and a very dark one. The Model #2 maple and wengé tile pairs European white maple, Acer pseudoplatanus, with African wengé, Millettia laurentii, in a 3'7" x 3'7" tile.

The Model #2 oak and wengé tile swaps the maple for American white oak, Quercus alba, in a 2'7" x 2'7" tile. Both are varnished with an Oil-UV lacquer. Maple gives the sharpest black and white effect for a gallery-like living room, while oak softens it slightly for a dining room.

Model #3: Large Tiles for Large Rooms

Model #3 is the largest tile, at 4'5" x 5'5", so the pattern has room to read in a ballroom-scale living room or a wide gallery. The Model #3 padouk and maple tile pairs African red padouk, Pterocarpus soyauxii, with European white maple and is varnished with an Oil-UV lacquer.

For a quieter scheme, the Model #3 oak tile uses Yorkshire and Cornwall oak in the same 4'5" x 5'5" format, with stained and natural oil finishes. It keeps the large geometry but trades the red and white contrast for oak tones.

A Contemporary Alternative: Biscuit Pienza

Not every geometric floor has to be a square tile. Biscuit Pienza is an oak parquet from the Biscuit collection by Listone Giordano, designed by Patricia Urquiola as part of the Natural Genius program.

Listone Giordano describes Natural Genius as bringing parquet into contemporary design and redefining the rules of classic boards and common laying patterns. For a client who wants pattern without a traditional look, it sits between our geometric tiles and the Versailles and parquet floors we covered earlier, and it works well in a modern loft.
