Weekend and year-round houses in Washington, Roxbury, Salisbury and Litchfield often see mud, dogs and wood stoves as much as dinner parties. Hickory suits that life well, and our wide plank range includes it in several formats and tones.
Here is how the hickory options compare.
Why Hickory Suits a Country House
Hickory is known for its strength and durability, as the Hickory Buckeye page notes, and it has bold grain and strong color variation from board to board. That makes it forgiving in a mudroom, kitchen or back hall.
The variation is also part of the appeal. Light and dark boards sit side by side, which reads as natural and relaxed in a farmhouse or a converted barn. If you prefer a calmer floor, a maple or hickory comparison can help you weigh the two.
Tudor and Autumn: Wide Plank With Saw Marks
Tudor Hickory has a classic, character-rich appearance with a smooth texture and occasional saw marks, in a Custom Color Matte finish. It is 3/4" thick in random widths of 4"-6", 4"-8" or 6"-9", with lengths from 2' up to 12'.
Autumn Hickory is precision milled for consistency in each board, in the same widths and lengths, with an Autumn finish that highlights the natural tones. Long, wide hickory boards suit a great room with a stone fireplace and a timber ceiling.
Sandy Creek: Riverbed Tones
Sandy Creek Hickory is known for flowing grain patterns and natural color movement inspired by riverbed tones. It has a smooth texture and a Custom Color Matte finish that highlights the organic variation in the wood.
It comes in 3/4" thick planks with random widths of 4"-6", 4"-8" or 6"-9". The softer, river-stone palette suits a house with a lot of glass looking onto fields or water, where a warmer hickory might feel too heavy. Our light versus dark guide helps with tone.

Oiled Hickory: Lillehammer and Trondheim

Lillehammer is a hickory prefinished in oil, with natural brown tones and a beautiful grain pattern. Trondheim is described as creating a classic, country inspired atmosphere, with light to dark brown color variation and a smooth grain pattern.
Both come in 4", 5" or 7" widths, in random lengths from 1-1/2' to 8', with a UV matte oil finish. They are offered as 3/4" solid or as 5/8" or 3/4" engineered with a 4mm wear layer, so the same tone can run over a wood subfloor or a slab. Our prefinished collection lists more options.
Solid Hickory: Buckeye and Breeze
Hickory Buckeye has a prefinished finish that highlights the natural contrast of hickory, with a rich mix of tones that enhances the bold grain. It is 3/4" solid in clear and character grades, in random lengths from 1' to 8'.
Hickory Breeze softens the natural variation while keeping hickory's distinctive grain, in clear grade widths from 2-1/4" up to 8-1/4". Solid suits a wood subfloor in an older farmhouse or a traditional colonial. Our solid hardwood post explains when solid is the right build.
