Chevron is usually discussed as a pattern, but in a finished room the colour of the floor does as much work as the zigzag. A pale chevron makes a narrow prewar living room feel wider, while a dark one gives a dining room weight. Our chevron collection includes five factory-coloured options.

This guide compares White Frost, Pearl Grey, Charcoal, Milk Chocolate and Chambord by species, grade, finish and plank size.

A French Pattern, Factory Made

Chevron flooring began in 17th century France, in the palaces and estates of the nobility. Unlike herringbone, where square-cut boards overlap, chevron planks are cut at an angle so each zig and zag meets on a clean center line. Our Charcoal chevron page sets out that difference.

These floors are made in the factory rather than cut on site. Each plank is milled to precision, which supports a fast and accurate installation. White Frost, for example, is listed with a 60° cut angle. For the pattern in a classic natural oak, see our herringbone guide.

Light Tones: White Frost and Pearl Grey

Pale chevron suits a room that needs more light, such as a north-facing apartment or a long hallway. White Frost chevron is oak in Select and Better grade with a Silk Oil finish, 5/8" thick, 5" wide and 21 9/16" long.

Pearl Grey chevron is the one ash floor of the five. It is Select and Better grade with a lacquer finish, 5/8" x 4 1/4" x 20 7/8". White Frost reads soft and slightly warm, while Pearl Grey is cooler and pairs well with white lacquered kitchens and grey stone.

Dark and Ultra Matte: Charcoal

A dark chevron makes a strong backdrop for art, pale upholstery and brass. Charcoal chevron is oak in Tavern grade with a Silk Oil ultra matte finish, so the colour reads deep without a glossy sheen.

Charcoal is offered 3/4" or 5/8" thick, in 4 1/4" or 7 1/2" widths, and in 20 7/8" or 17 1/4" lengths. The wider 7 1/2" plank gives a bolder zigzag in a large living room, while 4 1/4" keeps the pattern finer in a study. For prefinished chevron in natural European oak tones, see our European oak chevron floors.

Warm Mid-Tones: Milk Chocolate and Chambord

Between pale and dark sit two warm browns that suit a townhouse parlor or a classic six. Milk Chocolate chevron is oak in 1 Common grade with a Silk Oil finish, in widths of 5", 4 1/4" or 7 1/2", and lengths from 17 1/4" to 21 9/16".

Chambord chevron is also oak in 1 Common grade with Silk Oil, offered 3/4" or 5/8" thick, 4 1/4" or 7 1/2" wide, and 20 7/8" or 17 1/4" long. Both have the natural variation of a 1 Common grade, which keeps a warm floor from looking flat.

Construction and Matching Wide Plank

Several of these floors come in two constructions: 3-layer engineered with tongue and groove, or 3-layer single strip with the CosLoc locking system. White Frost and Milk Chocolate both list these options, and CosLoc is described as easy to install and reliable.

If the chevron is limited to one room, the same tone can continue as a plank floor elsewhere. Chambord Wide Plank and Milk Chocolate Wide Plank are brushed oak with a Silk Oil finish of four layers of UV-cured oil. That finish hides dust, small scratches and dents, and it needs renewing from time to time.
