Tudor, colonial and Georgian houses in Garden City, Manhasset and Plandome often have original oak floors that new rooms need to sit beside. Our prefinished solid hardwood in red oak and walnut is 3/4" thick, in clear and character grades and a range of widths.

Here is how the tones compare and how to choose a width.

Light Red Oak: Natural and Dawn

Red Oak Natural has a prefinished natural surface that enhances the wood's warm tones and pronounced grain. Its page describes red oak's open grain and natural variation as a classic hardwood appearance in both clear and character grades.

Red Oak Dawn has a soft, neutral color that brings out the organic texture of the wood. It is offered in the widest range of widths, from 2-1/4" up to 8-1/4" in clear grade. Our white oak versus red oak guide compares the species.

Nutmeg and Prestige

Red Oak Nutmeg has natural variation from light biscuit to medium brown, with subtle reddish and pinkish undertones. Its page notes that the mix of heartwood and sapwood creates a soft contrast, and that the grain is straight and open.

Red Oak Prestige shares that color range and soft contrast, with an open, ring-porous grain that gives a slightly textured surface and a consistent linear pattern. Both suit a dining room or living room where the floor should feel warm and traditional.

Toasted Acorn and Camo

Red Oak Toasted Acorn has a rich, medium tone that highlights the texture and variation of red oak. Its page describes a durable and timeless surface, which suits a family room or a center hall that sees daily traffic.

Red Oak Camo has natural color variation from light biscuit to medium brown with subtle reddish and pink undertones, producing what its page calls a layered and organic appearance. It comes in 3-1/4", 4-1/4" and 5-1/4" clear grade widths. Medium tones like these hide everyday dust better than very light or dark floors.

Walnut: Mist and Natural

Walnut Mist has a natural color range from light grayish-brown to deep chocolate brown, with clear contrast between darker heartwood and lighter sapwood. Its grain is generally straight but can appear wavy or irregular, and it comes in clear grade widths from 2-1/4" to 8-1/4".

Walnut Natural adds occasional purplish undertones and grain that can appear wavy or curly. Walnut suits a library or a formal dining room beside red oak in the main rooms. Our American walnut post covers walnut further.

Choosing a Width and Grade

Each floor is 3/4" solid, in random lengths from 1' to 8' with an average length up to 42". Narrow 2-1/4" or 3-1/4" strip suits an older house where the original floors are strip oak, so new and old rooms read as one. Our solid hardwood post covers other species.

Wider boards suit a new addition or a renovated kitchen and family room. Clear grade gives a cleaner surface, while character grade shows more natural marks. We can review photos of your existing floors and send samples in the closest tones. A virtual consultation is a quick way to start.
