Unfinished chevron lets your finisher set the exact color on site, in white oak, walnut, maple or red oak, solid or engineered.

Tudor and colonial houses in Scarsdale and Bronxville often have formal entry halls, libraries and dining rooms that suit a patterned floor. Our unfinished chevron gives you the pattern with a finish chosen for your house, applied on site.

Here is how the range is built and how to choose species, construction and piece size.

Why Choose Unfinished Chevron

An unfinished floor is sanded and finished after installation. That lets your finisher match a stain to existing millwork, blend new rooms with original floors, or create a custom color that no factory finish offers.

It also gives the chevron points a flat, continuous surface after sanding. For a house where the floor is a design feature rather than a backdrop, that level of control is the main reason architects specify unfinished chevron. The tradeoff is time on site for sanding, staining and coating, which needs to be planned into the schedule.

Milling Is Everything in a Pattern Floor

Our product pages are direct about this: it all starts with proper milling, more with a herringbone or chevron than with any other pattern. If the piece widths do not add up exactly, the pattern becomes impossible to maintain across a room.

That is why we supply chevron pieces milled for the pattern rather than cutting plank on site. Each species is offered in several sizes, so a long hall and a square dining room can use proportions suited to each. Our guide to herringbone and chevron explains how the two patterns differ.

Solid, 2-Layer or 3-Layer Engineered

Each species comes in three constructions. White Oak Chevron Solid suits a traditional subfloor in an older house. The 2-layer and 3-layer engineered versions add stability where conditions call for it.

In a Westchester house with a basement playroom over concrete, or radiant heat in a new kitchen addition, engineered chevron is usually the safer route. The main living floors can stay solid if the subfloor allows. We review subfloors, heat and moisture with your contractor before recommending one or the other.

Choosing a Species

White oak is the most requested species for chevron because it takes stain evenly and reads well in both light and dark finishes. Walnut chevron gives a deep, warm floor for a library or study without any stain at all.

Maple and red oak are also offered in all three constructions. Maple gives a pale, even surface, and red oak has a warmer tone and more open grain. If you are torn between the oaks, our white oak versus red oak guide lays out the differences.

Sizing the Pattern to the Room

Piece dimensions on the product pages run from 2 1/4" by 11 1/4" up through 3" pieces in several lengths and 4" pieces at 20" and 24". Narrow pieces create a fine, tight pattern in a small foyer. Wider, longer pieces give a bolder chevron that holds its own in a large living room.

Many owners run one size throughout so the pattern stays consistent between rooms. A virtual consultation with your plans lets us suggest proportions room by room, and our parquet collection has borders and other patterns if you want to frame the chevron field.

Quick Answers

White oak, red oak, maple and American walnut.

Solid, 2-layer engineered and 3-layer engineered, for each species.

Why buy chevron milled for the pattern?
