Colonial and Victorian houses in Westfield and Ridgewood often have center halls, living rooms and dining rooms that can carry a herringbone floor. Our unfinished herringbone lets that pattern be finished on site to match the rest of the house.
Here is how the range is built and how to plan it.
Four Species, One Pattern
Our unfinished herringbone comes in white oak, red oak, maple and American walnut. Red oak suits a house whose original floors are red oak, so new and old rooms read as one. Red Oak Herringbone is offered in 3-layer and 2-layer engineered formats as well as solid.
White oak is the most flexible for staining, maple gives a pale and even look, and walnut needs no stain at all for a deep, warm floor. Our white oak versus red oak guide is useful if you are matching to existing floors.
Solid 3/4" or Engineered
Each species is offered as a 3/4" solid herringbone, and in 2-layer and 3-layer engineered constructions. Maple Unfinished Herringbone 3/4" Solid suits a traditional wood subfloor in an older house, where a solid floor is the expected build.
Engineered versions are worth considering over a slab, in a finished basement, or where radiant heat has been added in a kitchen renovation. White oak is offered in a 3-layer balance engineered format. We review your subfloor and heating with your contractor before recommending one or the other, and our unfinished collection lists every option.
Border or No Border
Our product pages note that herringbone can be installed in several configurations, with or without a border. A border frames the field and suits a formal dining room or a center hall where the pattern stops at walls and thresholds.
Running herringbone wall to wall, with no border, feels more relaxed and modern, and works well in an open kitchen and family room. Many houses use both: a bordered hall, then borderless living spaces beyond. Our parquet collection has border options, and the pattern guide covers layouts.

Why Milling Matters
The product pages are clear that it all starts with proper milling, more with herringbone than with any other pattern. If the piece widths do not add up exactly, the pattern becomes impossible to maintain across a room.
That is why we supply pieces milled for herringbone rather than cutting plank on site. Sizes run from 2 1/4" by 11 1/4" through 3" pieces and 4" pieces up to 24" long, so the scale of the pattern can suit a narrow hall or a large living room. Our herringbone and chevron guide shows how the two patterns compare.
Finishing on Site
An unfinished floor is sanded flat after installation, then stained and coated. That gives an even surface across every joint and lets your finisher match color and sheen to existing floors, stair treads and millwork.
Plan for several days of finishing time in the schedule, with the house kept clear of traffic while coats cure. Furniture, rugs and appliances go back only once the finisher confirms the floor is ready. If you would rather avoid on-site finishing, our British oak herringbone post covers prefinished herringbone that installs ready to use.
