Apartments along Riverside Drive, West End Avenue and Central Park West often have generous rooms with strong architectural detail. A rift and quartered white oak floor gives them a calm, even surface that lets the moldings and windows lead.

Here is how our solid white oak range is specified and how to choose among its finishes.

What Rift and Quartered Sawing Gives You

The product page for White Oak Quartered and Rift Sawn Fresh Cut describes a straight, consistent grain pattern with a clean and refined appearance, and a natural color range from light to medium brown with subtle variation.

That straight grain is the reason architects specify it for formal rooms. Where flat sawn oak shows broad arches, rift and quartered boards read as fine parallel lines, which keeps a large living room or gallery hall quiet. Our white oak trends post covers how white oak is being used now.

Solid Boards and Width Options

The rift and quartered floor is 3/4" solid, with clear grade widths of 2 1/4", 3 1/4", 4 1/4", 5 1/4", 6 1/4", 7 1/4" and 8 1/4". Narrow widths suit a prewar apartment with original strip floors, and wider boards suit a gut renovation with a more modern plan.

A solid 3/4" board can be sanded and refinished in the future, which matters in an apartment you plan to own for decades. It is supplied prefinished, so the floor is ready when it is installed. Our prefinished collection shows the full set of species and finishes.

Finish Choices: Fresh Cut, Natural, Caramel and Cattail

Our solid white oak is offered in several prefinished tones. White Oak Fresh Cut and White Oak Natural show light to medium brown with pale yellowish hues and a straight, open grain.

White Oak Caramel and Cattail offer slightly different color directions with the same open grain and medium to coarse texture. In a west-facing apartment with strong afternoon light, a lighter tone keeps rooms bright without looking washed out. Seeing the samples in your own rooms at different times of day is the best test.

Clear Grade or Character Grade

Every finish is offered in clear and character grades. Clear keeps the surface uniform, which suits a formal room with paneled walls. Character grade allows more natural markings and variation, which can feel more relaxed in a family room or kitchen.

On the product pages, heartwood and sapwood are noted as not always sharply defined, so even clear grade has subtle variation from board to board. If you are deciding between white and red oak altogether, our white oak versus red oak guide lays out the differences in plain terms, and our unfinished floors are an option for a custom stain.

Planning a Co-op Floor

Most Upper West Side buildings are co-ops with alteration agreements, work hours and noise rules. A prefinished solid floor reduces on-site finishing, which can shorten the noisy and dusty part of the job. Your contractor will still need to plan acoustic underlayment to meet building requirements.

We usually start by confirming which rooms keep original floors, which get new boards, and how the new oak needs to meet the old at thresholds. A virtual consultation with your plans and a few photos is enough to set widths and grades for each room.
